My 1974 1800cc flat four VW
Engine in my 1972 VW Bus
February 2004
This is the crankcase with everything removed except for the crankcase internals and the oil pump.
This is the engine fully re-assembled after I cleaned all the grease and dirt off of the engine tins and fan housing and painted all of that with a teal engine paint. I replaced both heads with new ones (not rebuilt), had the cylinders honed, replaced the piston rings, pushrod tubes, oil pump, rear crank seal, and several gaskets and seals. Before I started it was very dirty, leaked oil from multiple places, had 4 leaky head gaskets (only 4 gaskets total originally), and leaky exhaust. Now it is clean, runs much quieter, has a little more power, and has only one very slight oil leak coming from a push rod tube seal, which is new. I figure there is a scratch in the case where the seal goes and the oil is leaking past that. Oh well.
