Woodrow "Woody" Crockett,
Tuskegee Airman #79

Once upon a time, something amazing happened. A family reunion of the Crockett family was organized and took place in Texarkana, Texas. And at this family reunion was Tuskegee Airman #79, Woody Crockett. And I was honored to meet him, talk to him and listen to him. His daughters were there, and while I was listening to him, he had to be rescued (I think for dinner). But It was great to meet one of the Tuskegee Airman. These are a group of men who had to fight not only for their country and their freedom, but they also had to very diplomatically fight for their right to fight for the freedom of their country during a time when there was great prejudice against them because of the color of their skin.
Their record is unmatched by any group of fighter pilots in World War II. They flew over 15,000 sorties on 1500 missions during World War II (Woody flew 149), and hundreds of those were bomber escort. It is said that in all of their bomber escort missions, they never lost even one bomber to enemy fighters, but that record is in dispute by some. They have a great record of accomplishment in any case.
On Monday Jun 28, 2004 there was an article in the
Texarkana Gazzette Which you can read by clicking here.
